Since 2022, Community Noise Lab has worked with Itawamba Community College students and faculty to undertake various environmental projects in Northeastern Mississippi. Our collaboration began with our “Summer of Science” research series, and students measured noise and air quality in Tupelo, Mississippi. Our collaboration has grown, and now we work with students year-round. In the photo above, Dr. Nica has traveled to Fulton to show students how to use air quality and noise monitoring equipment in a research methods class. They concluded the class by taking several spot measurements right on campus.

This semester, Their project will be to produce noise and air quality maps for Fulton, MS. Soon, Itawamba Community College will receive long-term real-time and filter-based air pollution monitors from Community Noise Lab and the University of Mississippi, one of our research partners. At the end of the semester, there will be a community meeting where students will share their findings with the larger community. Three interested students will continue to work with us as paid research interns during the summer of 2025. Stay tuned for more updates. We are excited to see their work develop over this semester and 2025!
